The Story of the SCWC '26
The Story of Day 6

Day 6 brought the final matches of the group stage, as teams from every country gave everything to reach Thursday’s finals. Away from the pitches, there were Congress sessions in the morning and a little time for the young people to enjoy the complex before another Mexico City storm brought the day to a very wet end.
Day 6 was a slightly shorter day for the tournament, with the morning given over to Congress sessions before the last round of group stage matches in the afternoon.
The Congress programme has been running alongside the football all week, and it has been one of the most important parts of the event. The young people have been speaking about the issues that affect their lives, listening to one another, and working towards the messages they will take to the General Assembly. It is not always easy to stand up and speak in a room full of people, particularly in a second or third language, but they have done it with courage and care.
The final group games
By the afternoon, attention had turned back to the football, with places in Thursday’s finals still to be decided. The young people played for their teams, their countries, and the badges on their shirts.
Every team had something to play for, whether they were trying to reach the Cup or the Shield, and while there were tired legs in some of the games (understandable after a long week), there was no shortage of effort.
A bit of time to breathe
There was also some welcome free time during the day, which was richly deserved after such a full week.
The complex here in Mexico City has been a wonderful home for the tournament, and the young people were able to enjoy it properly for a while; some went swimming, some danced, some played, and others simply spent time with their teams and the friends they have made over the past few days.
Those quieter parts of the week matter as well. A tournament like this is full of big moments, but it’s every bit as important everyone have a chance to connect and share their culture and stories. Hopefully by now, everyone has settled in and is getting ready for the big finale.
Two days to go
The day ended, as is now almost customary, with thunder overhead and a sudden, heavy rainstorm. Very quickly, the complex was full of people running back to their rooms, laughing, shouting, and trying not to get completely soaked.
There are now just two days left of the Street Child World Cup. We’re still looking forward to the General Assembly, the final stage of the football, and the closing ceremony, all of which should be extraordinary.
