International Day for Street Children 2015: our journey continues
Posted on the 12th April 2015
Today, April 12 2015, is the International Day for Street Children, a day to give a platform to the voices of millions of street children – and their champions – to speak out so the rights of street children cannot be ignored.
Join us in celebrating the incredible organisations we partner with across the world and most importantly the young people that they and we serve. We continue to be inspired by their stories and to work for their rights every single day.
This year’s special focus is the creation of a UN General Comment for Street Children providing defininitive guidance on how States must fulfil street children’s rights. For the first time, Governments’ obligations to street children under international law will be brought together and clearly laid out. Click here to find out more.
You can show your support and raise awareness with a #TweetForTheStreet. We’re louder together.
Real change inspired by people like you
We also continue to be inspired by you, just over a year ago the sun set on the 2014 Street Child World Cup and we couldn’t have delivered it without you. Your support made the dream a reality where 230 children were empowered as Ambassadors to fight for the rights of street children across the world.
Because of you, a movement was born. From Pakistan: a national resolution for 1.5m street children, to Brazil; advising Government on new policy for street children, to Mauritius; a new Government promising to prioritise issues faced by street children, to Kenya; Team Captain Benson, championing the rights of Kenya’s street children. In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this journey continues on from the Street Child World Cup. This weekend we hosted a Day of Inclusion led by Team Brazil Girls at their training pitch in the north of the city.
Have no fear, there is plenty coming up which we would love to get you involved with.
Street Child United Summit, 2015, London
In September 2015 your on-going support will enable us to hold our second Street Child United Summit. Once again we will welcome and serve our inspirational project leaders for a week of shared learning and fearless planning. Fred Shortland, director of our partner, Casa Alianza, told us, “We used to get invited occasionally to the table. Now we have our own table.”
Street Child Games 2016, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
As the world’s attention, returns to Brazil and specifically Rio, we will hold the first-ever Street Child Games in Rio in March, 2016. Led by our ‘alumni’ from 2014, we will continue their journey as global Ambassadors with a week of Olympic-themed games, a Street Child Congress focused on the rights of children and of course a wonderful array of arts empowerment activities.
More details on both to come soon, including how you can get involved through volunteering, fundraising and other opportunities. If you would like more information, please email: Helen@streetchildunited.org
