Our partner in India is Karunalaya Centre for Street and Working Children, based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Karunalaya has been working with street children in Chennai for the past 17 years, during which time they have reintegrated thousands of street children into their homes across India and Nepal. The centre provides shelter, education, as well as arts, music, sports and drama activities for street children. It has also led the Forum for Street Children in Chennai for two years.
Karunalaya organised a boys’ team to represent India at the Street Child World Cup Rio 2014.

The boys from Team India returned home to a great reception. One boy has been offered a place at the Malabar Police School in his home state of Kerala and he now studies there and plays for their football team. The rest of the team have been reintegrated with family nearby or continue to live and study at the Karunalaya centre.
Participation in the SCWC has raised awareness of Karunalaya’s work in India, and people have come forward to offer support. A company has offered their services to refresh their website and rework the logo and homepage.
